"Health Awareness Through Education."

Hope & Marian Miller Resource Centre Grand Opening

On September 29th, 2022, Caribbean Health Outreach achieved one of its most significant milestones: the official opening of the Hope and Marian Miller Resource Centre at Carey Park, Trelawny, Jamaica. The formal grand opening ceremony was held on January 20, 2023.

Members of the Carey Park Citizens Association and their President, Devon McAnuff, were in attendance to celebrate this landmark moment. Mr. McAnuff, a building contractor, did not hesitate in volunteering his services — his sterling contribution in both cash and in-kind effort resulted in the completion of this project, speaking to his unwavering commitment to volunteerism and community development.

The Resource Centre provides Carey Park's preschoolers with:

  • A fully equipped computer laboratory
  • A children's library with age-appropriate books and learning materials
  • A safe, inspiring space dedicated to early childhood education

CHO has been a patron sponsor of Carey Park Basic School for over five years, and this centre represents the culmination of sustained community investment. Our goal has always been to create a foundational thirst for knowledge that places these children on successful pathways toward self-actualization, good values, and good citizenship.

"This is what Caribbean Health Outreach is about," said President Hope Miller-Bodden. "Not just treating illness, but building the infrastructure for healthy, educated, thriving communities."

2019 Annual Golf Tournament — Another Record Year

The 14th Annual Caribbean Health Outreach Golf Tournament was held on Friday, August 23, 2019 at Chester Washington Golf Course in Los Angeles, California — and once again, the CHO community delivered a tremendous show of support.

Golfers of all skill levels made the pilgrimage to Chester Washington to enjoy a day on the greens while supporting a cause that changes lives in Jamaica. Proceeds from the tournament directly fund CHO's annual health missions, the Carey Park Basic School project, and community health programs.

Highlights from the 2019 tournament:

  • $25,000 Hole-in-One Cash Prize featured on the course
  • Multiple sponsorship tiers available and fully subscribed
  • Silent auction with items donated by local businesses and supporters
  • Record charitable contributions versus prior years

Sincere thanks to all our volunteers, players, supporters, caterers, and the entire Chester Washington team for making this event a tremendous success year after year. Your generosity directly heals lives in rural Jamaica.

Health Mission Report: Jamaica 2019

Caribbean Health Outreach's 2019 Jamaica mission was one of the most comprehensive in the organization's history. Based on overwhelming feedback from 2018 attendees, the annual professional educational symposium was expanded to a full day, including morning snacks and a full sit-down lunch — allowing for longer, richer presentations and an additional speaker.

The symposium, held on Sunday, May 26, 2019 at Tryall Resort and Villas, featured the following presentations:

  • Orlando Pile, MD (Medical Director): Diabetes — Management and Prevention
  • Kathi Brown-Favrot, RN (Education Director): HIV Update — Current Landscape
  • Andrew McNeil, MD: Emerging Infectious Diseases
  • Lucille Washington, OD: Common Diseases in the Elderly

Throughout the week, the CHO team deployed to communities in Hanover, Trelawny, and St. James providing free medical screenings, consultations, dental care, vision screenings, HIV testing, and STI/STD awareness education to schools and community members.

The mission continued CHO's tradition of reaching Jamaica's most vulnerable populations — those who often have no other access to professional medical care. As Medical Director Dr. Orlando Pile noted: "Every year we come back, we see familiar faces who have been waiting for us. That responsibility keeps us motivated."

Compton Community Health Fair 2018
September 29, 2018 Health Fair

Compton Community Health Fair 2018

On August 11th, 2018, Caribbean Health Outreach participated in the Annual Compton Community Health Fair — bringing the same compassionate, high-quality medical outreach that CHO delivers in Jamaica to the Los Angeles community right at home.

By the numbers — CHO's impact at the 2018 Compton Health Fair:

  • 56 adults received blood pressure and diabetic screenings
  • 324 children received sunglasses and school supplies
  • 73 young children and adolescents were seen by a CHO pediatrician
  • HIV education literature and diabetic nutrition materials distributed widely

The event showcased CHO's commitment to dual-geography service — serving underserved communities both in Jamaica and in the Caribbean diaspora communities of Southern California. The Compton Health Fair is one of the most important annual community events in the region, and CHO's participation ensures that hundreds of families receive health education and screenings they may not otherwise access.

Our team of nurses, physicians, and volunteers gave their Saturday to serve their neighbors. "Community health is not just about Jamaica," noted Secretary Bernice Sparks, RN. "It's about wherever our people are."

2018 Golf Tournament — 144 Players, Record Receipts

The 12th Annual Caribbean Health Outreach Golf Tournament on Friday, August 24, 2018 at Chester Washington Golf Course surpassed every previous year in both attendance and fundraising receipts.

The champion threesome of Greg and Marsha Carter and Dr. Orlando Pile (Medical Director) led the competition in a memorable performance on the greens. Their win added to the celebratory atmosphere of an event that continues to grow year over year.

2018 Tournament Highlights:

  • Over 144 players registered — more female participants than any prior year
  • More than 30 teams competing for trophies and prizes
  • 7:30am shotgun start with traditional putting contest opener
  • Record charitable receipts surpassing 2017 figures
  • Catering provided by the Chester Washington team

Sincere thanks to all volunteers, players, supporters, and sponsors who made this event possible. Every dollar raised goes directly to funding CHO's health missions and the Carey Park Basic School project in Jamaica.

Health Mission Report: Jamaica 2018

The Caribbean Health Outreach 2018 Jamaica Health Mission continued the organization's long tradition of delivering world-class medical care to rural communities in Hanover, Trelawny, and St. James.

The annual Professional Symposium was held on Sunday, May 27, 2018 at the Tryall Villa Cornwall Room, organized and facilitated by Kathi Brown-Favrot, RN (HIV Program Manager) and CHO Medical Director Orlando Pile, MD. This year's presentations covered:

  • Dr. Orlando Pile, MD: Cancer of the Eyelid — Awareness and Detection
  • Kathi Brown-Favrot, RN: Probiotics — Evidence and Application
  • Dr. Andrette Ward, MD (Pediatrician): Zika Virus — 2018 Update
  • Dr. Andrew McNeil, MD (Infectious Disease): Diabetes Management
  • Lucille Washington, OD (Optometrist): HIV/STI — Current Landscape

Throughout the week, STD/STI awareness education was provided to schools throughout the community. Hundreds of community members received free screenings, consultations, vision care, and health education across the three parishes.

As is CHO's mission: to reach the underserved, the vulnerable, and those with special needs — bringing healthcare to those who need it most, right where they live.

2017 Golf Tournament — 135 Players, Biggest Yet

The 11th Annual Caribbean Health Outreach Golf Tournament at Chester Washington Golf Course was the biggest in the organization's history at that time — with more than 135 players registered and attending.

At 7:30am sharp, participants began with the traditional putting contest before 28 teams (comprising male and female contestants) launched into competition for a wide range of trophies, prizes, and bragging rights. The fairways were full, the community spirit was high, and the charitable impact was significant.

Tournament Stats:

  • 135+ players — a new participation record
  • 28 competitive teams across all skill levels
  • Shotgun start at 7:30am with putting contest
  • Increased female participation vs. 2016
  • All proceeds directed to Jamaica health missions

The annual golf tournament is CHO's primary fundraising mechanism. "This event is the engine that powers everything we do in Jamaica," said VP Wilcox Bodden. "When our supporters show up on the course, they're showing up for thousands of patients they'll never meet — and that's extraordinary."

Compton Health Fair 2017 Recap

Caribbean Health Outreach participated in the Annual Health Fair in Compton on August 12th, 2017, continuing its commitment to serving the Caribbean diaspora community right here in Southern California.

The CHO team provided a full range of health services and supplies to community members who attended the fair:

  • Blood pressure screening for adults
  • Diabetic screening and counseling
  • Reading glasses distribution for adults in need
  • Sunglasses and school supplies for children
  • HIV education literature and diabetic nutrition guides

The Compton Community Health Fair draws thousands of residents from across the area each year, and CHO's presence ensures that our community has access to preventive health information and resources that are often out of reach. Public Relations Officer Patricia Ward, Optician, personally ensured vision care needs were addressed for attendees.

CHO's dual-geography mission — serving Jamaica AND Los Angeles — reflects the reality of who Caribbean Health Outreach is: a diaspora organization that gives back on both sides of the Caribbean Sea.

Crowdfunding Campaign: Carey Park Basic School
April 9, 2018 Education

Crowdfunding Campaign: Carey Park Basic School

Caribbean Health Outreach launched a crowdfunding campaign in 2018 to accelerate construction of the computer lab and library at Carey Park Basic School in Duncans, Trelawny, Jamaica — a project that would ultimately become the Hope and Marian Miller Resource Centre.

CHO has been a patron sponsor of Carey Park Basic School for over five years. We recognized that investing in these preschoolers' early education could change the entire trajectory of their lives. The school serves children from one of Jamaica's most economically disadvantaged communities along the northern coast of Trelawny.

Our crowdfunding goal was to raise enough to:

  • Equip a fully functional computer laboratory with age-appropriate hardware and software
  • Build out a children's library with a curated collection of books and learning materials
  • Create a safe, stimulating space where preschoolers could develop a love of learning
  • Lay the foundation for the community resource centre that opened in September 2022

"Caribbean Health Outreach recognizes the importance of investing in our youth and providing them better choices, tools, and options for their life's journey," said President Hope Miller-Bodden. "Education is health. An educated child is a healthier adult."

The campaign was a success — and in September 2022, the Hope and Marian Miller Resource Centre opened its doors to Carey Park's children.
